This week she wrote about <a href="http://www.needlenthread.com/2015/04/printing-on-fabric-embroidery-pattern-transfer.html" target="_blank">printing on fabric using freezer paper t</a>o give the fabric substance for feeding through the printer. I had used commercially prepared fabric for <a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=3618538164970670231#editor/target=post;postID=5154427445098950036;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=15;src=postname" target="_blank">my two BMX quilts </a>but from now on my fabric choice is practically unlimited, using Mary's method.<br />
<br />
So
my Good Friday morning was spent on a Treasure Hunt for a small roll of
freezer paper that I knew was lurking somewhere around the house.
Found it.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU8vsr4-HP1KXPR7mFy2UeQM5lPyG9II85RvXRzzM4rM_D2KWQCatRmD0ef_yR3W8zXBYKOLF6J-b6-m0KOit5Con7pERfHqB0Z9Nabs-YodgeId1qp53iE6Unfbd4uCryf-k4H56lFnoI/s1600/Victorian-Ladies+3+c.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU8vsr4-HP1KXPR7mFy2UeQM5lPyG9II85RvXRzzM4rM_D2KWQCatRmD0ef_yR3W8zXBYKOLF6J-b6-m0KOit5Con7pERfHqB0Z9Nabs-YodgeId1qp53iE6Unfbd4uCryf-k4H56lFnoI/s1600/Victorian-Ladies+3+c.jpg" height="320" width="182" /></a>I had a project in mind since seeing the <a href="http://sentimentalstitches.myshopify.com/products/victorian-ladies-redwork" target="_blank">Victorian Ladies designs by Sentimental Stitches</a>.
For me the trouble was that the ladies were 17" tall. I would find
that too large for the kind of quilts that I make. The other trouble
was that with the digital download of the pattern each lady came in
three parts which you were intended to print and tape together before
transferring your pattern to your fabric.<br />
<br />
But I wanted to follow Mary's instructions which involved preparing an A4 size piece of fabric to fit the computer tray.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
So....
It was a case of open up Photoshop, cut and paste the three pieces
together to make the lady, then crop this image , cutting off the excess
background. You can see the lines where I have made the join.<br />
<br />
Over
to Word and insert this into a blank page, adjusting the size to fill
most of the page. Print a test page on paper to check the size.<br />
<br />
I
put my freezer paper with fabric attached into the printer tray, which
with my printer is a shallow drawer under the printer and the printer
picked it up and printed it perfectly first try. That is quite unusual
in my life ! As I had been using a closely woven quilting fabric I
didn't feel the need to use sticky tape around the edges. The freezer
paper was well adhered then trimmed to A4 size using the rotary cutter
and this gave sharp edges which were of no trouble to the printer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQLB00MQ577KS4P-63e4QKW1x_81ysZ8KET9OGTgzN4su8YSDo_tPMi0RhWaQzVDNriwwbabqG_0p42xj-4OwbkrcXIsfzxUkI4jZZR_trumWStYSoGxCy5TNb0Zzf0UktHFBQODJRJrx9/s1600/Vic+Ladies+Start+Embroidery.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQLB00MQ577KS4P-63e4QKW1x_81ysZ8KET9OGTgzN4su8YSDo_tPMi0RhWaQzVDNriwwbabqG_0p42xj-4OwbkrcXIsfzxUkI4jZZR_trumWStYSoGxCy5TNb0Zzf0UktHFBQODJRJrx9/s1600/Vic+Ladies+Start+Embroidery.jpg" height="200" width="198" /></a></div>
To
embroider it I am using Madeira Pure Silk in a dark brown which I an
finding so beautifully easy to thread into the needle. And I am happy
with the background fabric - the pattern has a Victorian feel to it.<br />
<br />
I
have read many sets of instructions for printing on fabric over the
last two or three years but this is the first time, when reading Mary
Corbett's explanations, that I felt confident enough to try it for
myself. Now I have so many quilts in mind using this technique that I
will never have enough time to make them all.<br />

The 4 inch square sides are embroidered with a, b, c and 1, 2, 3<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRhmKPhWpXQ6jtJry7XpCRmfoIEZAecY3zmXrZpwxKlEznOw2R2vyuAPh3Lj-EODLGyIph8e6h7q7VcMCHBv9fOWUOOlurJhTQ4laEhh-33hUYeSA3VmLyfYwswd6a68m46Cu0MDf-BXz-/s1600/c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRhmKPhWpXQ6jtJry7XpCRmfoIEZAecY3zmXrZpwxKlEznOw2R2vyuAPh3Lj-EODLGyIph8e6h7q7VcMCHBv9fOWUOOlurJhTQ4laEhh-33hUYeSA3VmLyfYwswd6a68m46Cu0MDf-BXz-/s1600/c.jpg" height="346" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The pattern came from A Little Different, that wonderful shop in Sharp St, Newtown (Geelong) The first task was to do the embroideries then cut the squares down to size. This time I remembered to put a backing on the fabric first.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNc2otfXNO7f2bclTKNt6FHOsIOS5ubxOYiBKmK6s26aubtJE9x7PWz1_N25IIuEtDWBi_Yvm2XGzrm3DNCcyNb70eaItIes9-pLNrFpaXHMMsj6boiK-i4YOnmTke-iypxHuRuOOPyiFV/s1600/abc123++The+pieces+b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNc2otfXNO7f2bclTKNt6FHOsIOS5ubxOYiBKmK6s26aubtJE9x7PWz1_N25IIuEtDWBi_Yvm2XGzrm3DNCcyNb70eaItIes9-pLNrFpaXHMMsj6boiK-i4YOnmTke-iypxHuRuOOPyiFV/s1600/abc123++The+pieces+b.jpg" height="640" width="476" /></a></div>
<br />
Lay them out as the pattern shows, then join, adding tabs randomly as you go, and stuff.<br />

But the faithful never fade and yesterday in our Friday group Pam was doing the binding on her Geelong Football quilt. It was made from de-constructed bed linen for the Geelong Cats symbols and hand embroidered with the years when Geelong won the premiership. all nine of them. Such a lot of years.</span><br />

<br />
But then I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with them. They were from an Inspirations magaxine some time ago but they had used them in an all white quilt, which was absolutely beautiful, straight out of a glossy magazine spread, but rather impractical in my world.<br />
<br />
So every now and then I would come across them in the drawerr then put them back again. I just didn't want to do my usual way of just having a rectangular border around each embroidery. But the last time this happened some scraps of fabric were near the flowers which just happened to look like ribbons and a local shop had a sale on with fat quarters for $3 each so I was able to get a variety of fabrics for the ribbons.<br />
<br />
What next ? Well I'm thinking perhaps a very narrow, slightly bright border first, then a wider border in one of the ribbon fabrics if any of them are still availab.e<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Shame on me but I forgot to put backing on the white fabric before I started the embroideries.. This is not a good idea. And the white fabric is a bit transparent so I hope when the white batting is behind it the seams won't be quite so obvious.<br />
<br />

I hope that having got this far that it doesn't sit in the drawer too long while I make up my mind on how to continue.<br />

<br />
But here is what turned out to be the simplest and fastest lap quilt that I have ever made - a series of diamond shapes which radiate from the centre and fit into a hexagon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2ijpHNlzDdtCtMhpO5lawkA-TtpHU94y3EenHA1bzoc3dMB7sLGiUy0EgRwJZYHvqcGDbqWwUxpyhUcO4gabRvOsCzzEGqa4DZV42AAiCwU5JVvywXQT2KEETY4cF758WQ85UGjAgR6J2/s1600/Diamond+quilt+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2ijpHNlzDdtCtMhpO5lawkA-TtpHU94y3EenHA1bzoc3dMB7sLGiUy0EgRwJZYHvqcGDbqWwUxpyhUcO4gabRvOsCzzEGqa4DZV42AAiCwU5JVvywXQT2KEETY4cF758WQ85UGjAgR6J2/s1600/Diamond+quilt+1.jpg" height="476" width="640" /></a></div>
\<br />
Part of its simplicity comes from the cutting out. Six inch strips are cut across the fabric simply using the width of your six inch ruler. Then each strip is cut tinto diamonds using the 60 degree line on the ruler.<br />
<br />
Because there was no measuring, just using the width of the ruler for the cutting, I found the piecing was much more accurate than with my usual measure and cut. <br />
<br />
The backing is also easy as the finished width of the quilt is just right for using one width of your normal quilting fabric. <br />
<br />
I followed the instructions for the quilt at <a href="http://sewnbyleila.blogspot.com.au/2011/04/diamond-quilt-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Sewn by Leila</a><br />

Dear Diary<br />
<br />
So sorry that I've been neglecting you. But every Friday afternoon I have been faithfully hand quilting my last two quilts. It's been slow progress though. But with the temperature hitting 45 degrees last week I finally put together the last pieces of my Vases of Flowers quilt. I had done the embroideries over 12 months ago - I seem to do the embroideries and then can't decided how to put them together. They need to be integrated into the quilt, not just sit as contrasting boxes on a background. In this case the various florals have been chosen to tone with the flowers in each vase.<br />

The background colour is not quite showing accurately. I think I would call it an oyster green, if there is such a colour. Just a very soft off-beat green. It is 50" square and is now on the pile for quilting.<br />
<br />
But just remember dear diary that you were my first bloggy love and though I have less time to spend with you and less things to report on these days because I am too busy doing other things I will still visit you as often as I can.<br />

At least at our Friday afternoon meetings if I don't talk too much I catch up on a little hand quilting. I did these six little leaf embroideries last year and last week I saw some soft cream and beige fabric that had a delicate pattern of flowers, leaves and birds in just the right colours to complement the leaves,with this result.<br />

I am going to try something different for the backing, or at least different for me. I have chosen a wide backing fabric self-patterned with scrolly stems and leaves . I am going to use this pattern as my hand-quilting lines and so am going to do the quilting from the back side.of the quilt for a nice all over curved stitching. It is going to be an interesting experience !Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10557443058036435775noreply@blogger.com1Geelong VIC 3220, Australia-38.1485437 144.36134790000006-38.198492699999996 144.28066690000006 -38.0985947 144.44202890000005tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618538164970670231.post-32970907187338321912013-07-22T20:48:00.000+10:002013-07-22T20:48:03.811+10:00Buttercup<br />
The little baskets in this quilt were made using some charm squares from Moda's Buttercup. The colours are very delicate and feminine. The basket handles were sewn on last year and it has gradually been put together, with the borders added this weekend. Now to prepare it for quilting, with another UFO taken off the pile.<br />

I used Brandie's tutorial given on ABC at<br />
http://abrandiecreation.blogspot.com.au/2011/08/tiny-basket-tutorial.html<br />
and<br />
http://abrandiecreation.blogspot.com.au/2011/08/tiny-basket-tutorial_16.html<br />
to learn how to make the baskets. When it came to putting the quilt together I couldn't face all those tiny cornerstones so this is what I did.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiflTFVTxFDrWte8Tukvxrx_p3rL1ewbWMvogtXDSCVCr4jkqipZs8fy1vWOzj3I7KTJkceW7YPD9VRp1NWY4JS20qYSgqBcUj4blUXkeH0nY6s4Yi3qJ6jSN2OAwUb41znmNaBmtKA0-3Z/s1600/Closeup+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiflTFVTxFDrWte8Tukvxrx_p3rL1ewbWMvogtXDSCVCr4jkqipZs8fy1vWOzj3I7KTJkceW7YPD9VRp1NWY4JS20qYSgqBcUj4blUXkeH0nY6s4Yi3qJ6jSN2OAwUb41znmNaBmtKA0-3Z/s320/Closeup+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I decided to vary the widths of the sashings. I took four blocks - two plain and 2 baskets - and joined them into groups of four with 1/2" sashing.<br />
I took four groups of four and used 3/4" sashing to turn them into groups of 16.<br />
I took four groups of sixteen and used 1" sashing to turn them into groups of 64.<br />
I finally took four groups of 64 (or part thereof) and used 11/4" sashing to turn them into groups of (well, you calculate it !) You can see this final wider sashing better in the photo below, where the sashings cross each other in the bottom half of the quilt.<br />
<br />
I alternated two different fabrics for the sashing, In retrospect it might have been better if they were not quite so close in colour.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV8yuEilBIvmzvqsdFI5j9pxEzjJ_SbcABAVxaC32fH85fRB0L3tYXkM92DqEJwS7Jgm0Pt3IadaOmXwXfr7Xnk8dGziPIQWzxHdNr2_iH1-MWZTRP_UqDHAKp1ZpsrKXvusRXPs6tI66C/s1600/Little+Baskets+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="619" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV8yuEilBIvmzvqsdFI5j9pxEzjJ_SbcABAVxaC32fH85fRB0L3tYXkM92DqEJwS7Jgm0Pt3IadaOmXwXfr7Xnk8dGziPIQWzxHdNr2_iH1-MWZTRP_UqDHAKp1ZpsrKXvusRXPs6tI66C/s640/Little+Baskets+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Another bit of a variation I made was to occasionally replace the cream background with a co-ordinating colour from the same range, occasionally as the background to a handle and sometimes in place of the cream diamond. It helped break up the regularity.<br />
<br />
I was also lucky enough to have had a little bias binding maker gadget from the quilt shop to turn out beautifully regular bias binding for me. Needle turning to make the handles is not my forte !<br />
<br />
So, thanks Brandie for showing us how to make the baskets.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10557443058036435775noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618538164970670231.post-13101058573120692252013-05-30T17:27:00.000+10:002013-07-24T09:49:51.028+10:00Shall I call it an Autumn Quilt ?It's not really necessary to name every quilt but it does make it easier to attach a name otherwise I'll end up referring to this latest effort as that dark floral thingy with the bits of orange.<br />
<br />
So I have still been trying to clean up some UFOs and use up some of the fabric I have while resisting the temptation to buy more. But at times I get easily distracted and concentrate on other interests so I haven't blogged for a while.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh383PFyr-ew8A-6wUPUBUctQDGJfhxlUFbyyrj-pkXtjwZVPfEpep77d134pIu60-eWfS6BfeG_nImK6CM2yLfTenAv9Wf8CBQjKiUHhUwjxmsj4cx7Am-mBKNrl8X-cfhCiwUEj47iyGx/s1600/Autumn+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="392" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh383PFyr-ew8A-6wUPUBUctQDGJfhxlUFbyyrj-pkXtjwZVPfEpep77d134pIu60-eWfS6BfeG_nImK6CM2yLfTenAv9Wf8CBQjKiUHhUwjxmsj4cx7Am-mBKNrl8X-cfhCiwUEj47iyGx/s400/Autumn+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I still have to add a cream border then a noisy border made from the scraps. The bottom right corner is quite square but has been lifted by a breeze in the photo.<br />
<br />
Often quilts never look quite like you envisioned them. Most times when I look at this quilt top I see the strong-coloured blocks, but the next time the cream colour dominates. The first time this happened to me I was amazed that my first thought was for the 21st Century Garden at the entrance of the Geelong Botanic Gardens, a modern arrangement I couldn't bear to live with. It includes some metal sculptures which represent trees. Can you see the resemblance ?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA_vezzQYnMowTDlsTVf3WHg5oq2PB-AWQrng1_Ocyax-pLc0dsag_F1HAmcoa4R29aKkQ7nOoJD4XSPT2AoMXbrWAOa5NhR-AT-mbIyjt96WrCsfo_ruh6BW4oywAK0wVOfgC4_rjJFv_/s1600/Sculpture+Trees.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="205" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA_vezzQYnMowTDlsTVf3WHg5oq2PB-AWQrng1_Ocyax-pLc0dsag_F1HAmcoa4R29aKkQ7nOoJD4XSPT2AoMXbrWAOa5NhR-AT-mbIyjt96WrCsfo_ruh6BW4oywAK0wVOfgC4_rjJFv_/s320/Sculpture+Trees.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The next time I looked at it I started seeing a collection of Eureka Flags (from Australian history at Ballarat). My imagination is working overtime on what is a rather ordinary quilt top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/84/Eureka_Flag.svg/220px-Eureka_Flag.svg.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="208" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/84/Eureka_Flag.svg/220px-Eureka_Flag.svg.png" width="320" /></a></div>
Earlier this year I had nearly finished a Starry Farmers quilt. This is now finished..I hand quilted the centre then I did some random squiggly quilting with the machine on the outer border. it was the first time I had tried this.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Winter officially starts the day after tomorrow so it's likely that I'll spend more time on P and Q over the next few months.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10557443058036435775noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618538164970670231.post-5317445204871743292013-01-13T11:33:00.000+11:002013-01-13T11:33:19.020+11:00Starry FarmersLasr August I made some 6" Farmer's Wife blocks from<a href="http://www.thefarmerswifequilt.com/contact.html" target="_blank"> Laurie Aaron Hird's book</a> and they were looking good.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrYE9AHByW3GIGjBQRupuGq9XnGnFDX3ZwlcBTFgenK5avDo-1eOpjzxhKOdvT7f6KSS1bKcyYVJZp81bNKB2t6pQzZ0ORzbLzhUEcSFU6YQGI7A6NmgjzYZxn5DNbrYHzdOF0mBTFK0dU/s1600/First+Few+farmer%2527s+Wife%253Bjpg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrYE9AHByW3GIGjBQRupuGq9XnGnFDX3ZwlcBTFgenK5avDo-1eOpjzxhKOdvT7f6KSS1bKcyYVJZp81bNKB2t6pQzZ0ORzbLzhUEcSFU6YQGI7A6NmgjzYZxn5DNbrYHzdOF0mBTFK0dU/s320/First+Few+farmer%2527s+Wife%253Bjpg.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
In the lull after Christmas I brought the basket out again and had a look at what I'd done. Considering the quantity of UFOs I have I decided that perhaps it was time to convert these blocks into a quilt.<br />
<br />
There weren't enough blocks to show them off with just a small sashing as in the picture so I cut a heap of triangles to put on on the corners of each on-point patchwork piece to turn it into a square. Once again I was just using up left-over pieces from other quilts.<br />
<br />
I had designed (scribbled ?) a layout on paper but when I put all the pieces in place on the carpet it looked a bit of a mess. So on and off for two days I crawled around the carpet rearranging the pieces and threatening to throw the whole lot in the bin.<br />
<br />
In the end I took a photo to remind me of what went where - I really did need to pick up all the pieces so that I could get from one end of the room to the other without entering into a long jump competition. The resulting quilt top is -<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuyCtVInWNCecnGzWwAYO63Fhpbh_DBEzjlb5xVSDtA25xa1Z39PoxgyeXnTEwW1ev5jDkGnouwtWGmPlpznsAQvoR2_qCdXiAxRyBAekfqOKywndRgOwmQmt19tgCMVYINXE5U94gCZZI/s1600/Starry+Farmers+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="293" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuyCtVInWNCecnGzWwAYO63Fhpbh_DBEzjlb5xVSDtA25xa1Z39PoxgyeXnTEwW1ev5jDkGnouwtWGmPlpznsAQvoR2_qCdXiAxRyBAekfqOKywndRgOwmQmt19tgCMVYINXE5U94gCZZI/s320/Starry+Farmers+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Most of the time I call it Starry Farmers but at other times I call it HotchPotch as it really is a bit of a jumble. If I was doing it again I think I might try putting the small blocks together with a dark green sashing as in the first photo and use it on point as the centrepiece of the quilt, then build it up from there. It would probably have shown off the blocks to better advantage. The one thing I am pleased with is that when adding the border I decided to extend the side stars into the border to make them complete. It is 54" square and the binding will be dark green.<br />
<br />
I'll piece together some more of the bigger scraps to make the backing.<br />
<br />
And just for fun, and because the more I play around on the computer the longer I can put off the things I should be doing -<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We
enjoy meeting at Lorraine's house every Friday afternoon and today was
our last meeting for the year. So here is what we were doing.<br />
<br />
Lorraine has finisned her Christmas wall hanging <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqGW4CDmqaPjnUAOBl2sBFg-0JmkhaPcQhjbLRvRt6vLpSwlh3KvmheBVgoudTtjKQ4kfOgpxYFg5LAmrh9_Lttu1oUV42BKVRzYcxZpN3ZVCYSDZwY46Y0RMYtPSNUlyt63MwvaLpBGbf/s1600/Noel+Lorraine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqGW4CDmqaPjnUAOBl2sBFg-0JmkhaPcQhjbLRvRt6vLpSwlh3KvmheBVgoudTtjKQ4kfOgpxYFg5LAmrh9_Lttu1oUV42BKVRzYcxZpN3ZVCYSDZwY46Y0RMYtPSNUlyt63MwvaLpBGbf/s400/Noel+Lorraine.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />

But after the concentration of doing two quilts at once I think I needed a bit of rest and relaxation from embroidery and quilting though I didn't expect it to last this long. But now I'm starting to feel the stirring of a renewed interest and am planning what my post-Christmas activities will be. Not that I've been completely idle. I've started working again on some embroideries of vases of flowers which I hope will end up in a quilt one day.<br />

Doing those mitred corners with matching patterns was almost too much for my sewing skill level. But I'm pleased with the overall effect and the personalization with J's racing number and photos. Now onto the second quilt - same layout but with different number and photos. <br />

But the centre square of the first of my two BMX quilts is now done and I'm reasonably happy with it. So far it measures 29" square. Two different borders come next.<br />

Here are the first few blocks waiting to be trimmed into 9" squares. There also is a narrow strip of bike chains which I will use as sashing and two photo prints showing their racing numbers on shields to be incorporated into the quilt somewhere.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnX9T3vWx3dPDnZ2b2G7qDhbicjxZjG06kWItJ1PvkXz7S4wtqmbcC6mT0bGiQ5kdu2hHVJCzg9ktw5NWxO5WJVHyacmDoeF9VhT-VRmOC6JKE-D_F3uOyfXA89TXOp9KCQKfflwRiQO1b/s1600/First+Blocks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnX9T3vWx3dPDnZ2b2G7qDhbicjxZjG06kWItJ1PvkXz7S4wtqmbcC6mT0bGiQ5kdu2hHVJCzg9ktw5NWxO5WJVHyacmDoeF9VhT-VRmOC6JKE-D_F3uOyfXA89TXOp9KCQKfflwRiQO1b/s400/First+Blocks.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
I would also like to include photos of the boys - I've have had my first try at photo printing on fabric and am using purchased prepared fabric. But I don't know that I'm completely satisfied with the quality of the prints. I used a HP C5280 printer and the normal colour ink cartridges.<br />

If anyone has any advice or useful links they would me most welcome. Actually this photo fascinates me as at first glance it looks as though the front bike is about to ride right out of the picture. So now I'm tempted to juggle that lower piece of fabric to match up the curve of the photo wheel with the fabric wheel to improve the illusion !Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10557443058036435775noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618538164970670231.post-70622158867169421312012-06-22T23:42:00.000+10:002012-06-22T23:42:12.927+10:00Dress Me Up - finished quilt topI feel as though a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders now that my Dress Me Up embroideries have come together in a quilt top. My photography leaves a lot to be desired, but I think you can get the general idea of how it looks. It measures 55" by 64".Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10557443058036435775noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618538164970670231.post-56204531356701513452012-05-21T13:24:00.003+10:002012-05-21T17:57:26.797+10:00A bit of variety - knittingTo add a bit of variety to life I got this baby shawl out of the cupboard where it has been sitting unfinished for four years. The border on one side and the centre panel both needed finishing. As I have a habit of putting together bits and pieces from different patterns it took me a whole evening (with one eye on the TV of course) to work out exactly what I had been doing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvX6TNZnyo-gjOSqYxXuazvN73EOCQlnRSYEU4KZ6Qhs_9FJO0PNxs9LlcnP_s8GrLuKV3h0-02qBVMLRIqmex1jhjHyvorvZhZ-uk78O62q5Fju2ANwSxPfiOEsULPkawo2ECY1E1YMp5/s1600/Baby+Shawl+No+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvX6TNZnyo-gjOSqYxXuazvN73EOCQlnRSYEU4KZ6Qhs_9FJO0PNxs9LlcnP_s8GrLuKV3h0-02qBVMLRIqmex1jhjHyvorvZhZ-uk78O62q5Fju2ANwSxPfiOEsULPkawo2ECY1E1YMp5/s640/Baby+Shawl+No+7.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>It's knitted in Te Awa 2 ply Baby Merino pure wool, a favourite of mine and measure 54 " square. It will come in handy as a gift but I'm beginning to wonder if young mums these days are so keen or appreciative of something which is hand-made and which just can't be thrown in the washing machine but needs a bit of TLC.<br />
<br />
Apart from the knitting I could call it possum week. What do you think of this little ringtail possum. They are far less common within town boundaries than the brushtail possum<br />

She should keep warm travelling to and fro in her little cape. Now the problem is of how to put them together.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyaSJKmn3dtCATSCRgSbbnYXKCM8CMCx6bvm9vIleDyDwXK3M1hyphenhyphen3TBpdDfOHHBvHvqbdkL3msJBEPjTzuQllr-ePMeKZqSR3CkqYsVwcbhAdjxa_pUWhmEt3spzK5pqpBCIZ5gBVdvR63/s1600/Dress+12+finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyaSJKmn3dtCATSCRgSbbnYXKCM8CMCx6bvm9vIleDyDwXK3M1hyphenhyphen3TBpdDfOHHBvHvqbdkL3msJBEPjTzuQllr-ePMeKZqSR3CkqYsVwcbhAdjxa_pUWhmEt3spzK5pqpBCIZ5gBVdvR63/s320/Dress+12+finished.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>I'm trying to decide if I can combine some of the illustrations in this Paris fabric with the twelve embroideries. The ladies in the fabric are just over half the height of the ones in the embroidery so I'm thinking that at that size perhaps twelve of these ladies wouldn't dominate the embroideries.<br />

But I don't seem to have been making much progress lately and it hardly seemed worth writing about. I have started on quilting my Pretty in Purple but it's the same old story - I start off with thimbles and other quilting aids but it's not long before I discard them - I like to feel the needle with my fingers. Next thing the quilting has to be put aside while the holes made in my fingers by the needle get a chance to heal ! The front of the quilt is quite patterned so I have used an inexpensive lavender poplin for the backing which will show up the quilting . After all my efforts the seam down the middle is not quite straight !<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKYR5X6lPB_DCTURAXnZmwTP2Zn44jHIGN8889G7Bisjt55XVqrVDyT6EVYLJYPBCo-Aea3UwbHY06ROrrz25RxvCUiBNG47wp1IwPM7mwtntNFGBKj-Ctc6KbWWr5kt-mfMPI06tyK698/s1600/Quilt+Back+1+-b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKYR5X6lPB_DCTURAXnZmwTP2Zn44jHIGN8889G7Bisjt55XVqrVDyT6EVYLJYPBCo-Aea3UwbHY06ROrrz25RxvCUiBNG47wp1IwPM7mwtntNFGBKj-Ctc6KbWWr5kt-mfMPI06tyK698/s320/Quilt+Back+1+-b.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<br />
Then there's the Dress Me Up embroideries. Here is No 11- a very plain dress with a silver and pearl brooch.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-Iu22wQyggdIbF38KS50xhgLCwEtsIw7et5_6jQgzKmPuMqnED7pFgKS2WH-T1YonQwxq6NZYxqzFQ60IL6KBnnYxFzEqZPFRCxxKB01fv3HcTO92GVZMCfgbhe-b_ySyP1g7yCNGvZpZ/s1600/Dress+11+finished.jpg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-Iu22wQyggdIbF38KS50xhgLCwEtsIw7et5_6jQgzKmPuMqnED7pFgKS2WH-T1YonQwxq6NZYxqzFQ60IL6KBnnYxFzEqZPFRCxxKB01fv3HcTO92GVZMCfgbhe-b_ySyP1g7yCNGvZpZ/s320/Dress+11+finished.jpg.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
And No 12 turned out to be very plain too. The little cape was supposed to be embroidered to look Christmassy but I decided I didn't want it that way. So I wondered why couldn't I just applique little capes onto the embroidery to take away the plain look. After all <a href="http://maisieandtheboys.blogspot.com.au/2012/04/busy-stitching.html" target="_blank">Marina</a> appliques these wonderful butterflies onto her embroidery and they look fantastic. So I tried lots of different fabrics .<br />
<br />
A little fur cape would be appropriate for the fifties but I think I might make a mess of sewing it on. And it wouldn't be really practical. The belt hasn't been embroidered yet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEpWIbEF1_C7taDm1SXm68w8eRKXiC3dhUDN0R13KH0CoNvYltlgMsDhSEJYXh-8VzD7Ks75lnS5BBN2VcfWyUmGguetU2S62TBDsUyro1-J8uizmf2w2hLKoNVTB-NO5ZSolWyeEDMQ8F/s1600/no+12+cape+-c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">n;t<img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEpWIbEF1_C7taDm1SXm68w8eRKXiC3dhUDN0R13KH0CoNvYltlgMsDhSEJYXh-8VzD7Ks75lnS5BBN2VcfWyUmGguetU2S62TBDsUyro1-J8uizmf2w2hLKoNVTB-NO5ZSolWyeEDMQ8F/s320/no+12+cape+-c.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Another fabric I was given - the colours match the dress nicely but it's a bit heavy looking and doesn't exactly look like the fifties. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipknxZJyzSV0bknSToXW1_eoHxVu_JeSYrQ7XRyB2U7JzXHCUtxv9P2k_rzorZ0AeNytc7BdksVBGQUzCV8RYU_3WcNqXRmcNMCwtPj1bVFiVHmoaD0EoSLKjn8lMAWITpfefExy8S6V0e/s1600/no+12+cape+-b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipknxZJyzSV0bknSToXW1_eoHxVu_JeSYrQ7XRyB2U7JzXHCUtxv9P2k_rzorZ0AeNytc7BdksVBGQUzCV8RYU_3WcNqXRmcNMCwtPj1bVFiVHmoaD0EoSLKjn8lMAWITpfefExy8S6V0e/s320/no+12+cape+-b.jpg" width="141" /></a></div><br />
<br />
So I suppose I'll go back to embroidery and perhaps fill in the cape with an embroidered pattern but what stitch would I use. I am a copier and am not good at creating and at the moment my few creative juices are all dried up.<br />
<br />
Of course I might just be prevaricating as when No 12 is finished I am going to have to decide how I am going to put them together into a quilt and I am not looking forward to that decision.<br />
<br />
Then just recently there's been the matter of visitors. I follow my hobbies in the living room, not in a room where I can shut the door on my muddle. Here I can pick something up and sew a few stitches while the vegies cook or while having a coffee or at any odd time of the day or night. And for my usual visitors I don't worry about my clutter. BUT when you know out-of-towners are going to be welcomed in that front door several times in the next few days then everything, and I mean everything, gets shoved away in any old spot where it will fit. Now I am going to have to try and find things again.<br />
<br />
So sorry Marion, hopefully now I can again have a clear creative mind, sensitive healed fingers and my lovely clutter around me again and perhaps do some craft work worth writing about !Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10557443058036435775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618538164970670231.post-20591567064723794022012-04-25T19:56:00.002+10:002012-04-25T22:52:00.313+10:00Final border on Pretty in PurpleToday I added the final border to my Pretty in Purple quilt. Hopefully tomorrow I can get it ready for quilting.<br />

<br />
I've been doing plenty of reading lately. I always enjoy Ruth Rendell and her alter-ego Barbara Vine. At the moment I'm reading Asta's book and am thoroughly enjoying it as usual. But there's something about the way she introduces her characters which bamboozles me. After 50 pages I've had to go back to the beginning and use a pen and paper to make a list of he goes with her goes with he goes with her and build up a tree of family and other people. Without this as a reference I just can't make sense of the story !<br />
<br />
Before that I found a couple of Kate Mosse books - Labyrinth and Sepulchre. It's ages since I've read one of this kind of book where a person's brain can retain traces of their forebear's history. Makes for a really good read with the story moving between the present and the past, in this case the wars of hundreds of years ago of intolerance in southern France.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10557443058036435775noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618538164970670231.post-90686718901794713732012-03-27T17:49:00.001+11:002012-03-27T17:49:23.913+11:00Fifties Dress No 10 and Pretty in PurpleThe time slips away so quickly but at last Fifites Dress No 10 for "Dress Me Up" is done. I still have to buy the fabric for the final border - possibly I'll use the same floral fabric as the large scallops - and make a pile of those little purple circles to fit in between the triangles. I had promised myself that I'd never again attempt to needle-turn stems and leaves but really, these circles come in the same frustrating category ! I'm all thunbs when it comes to needle-turning.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgccj2WH9zbk2P_d_MPYUmgsW3Q4saG-T11Yi8_nDzrih5TIne_O6fBjuhZC7crGsz0xJ-fztAubdsKJKXfGPkNQuG3VzrtcHRpJ9rS7AjgvycUSZJ2pKX7PltzfmT4wKCyLDt6dK05d3UP/s1600/Pretty+in+Purple+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgccj2WH9zbk2P_d_MPYUmgsW3Q4saG-T11Yi8_nDzrih5TIne_O6fBjuhZC7crGsz0xJ-fztAubdsKJKXfGPkNQuG3VzrtcHRpJ9rS7AjgvycUSZJ2pKX7PltzfmT4wKCyLDt6dK05d3UP/s640/Pretty+in+Purple+1.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQDO9_k13C0UhSRomMzkJuSzk7KykKS-m-xvmoL95ffk3AMFAAJiNp5XqJBh1F0OP_N1rMnstQ-cZwPs1osfUK0EJWUyOvDdcAPzQVxIoAPURkUbz2nPBTyu7keWjaIniFaQQBY3cYtKIn/s1600/Rose+star+with+11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQDO9_k13C0UhSRomMzkJuSzk7KykKS-m-xvmoL95ffk3AMFAAJiNp5XqJBh1F0OP_N1rMnstQ-cZwPs1osfUK0EJWUyOvDdcAPzQVxIoAPURkUbz2nPBTyu7keWjaIniFaQQBY3cYtKIn/s320/Rose+star+with+11.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>have nearly eleven blocks completed. At the moment they're lying on the floor on the back of an old quilt as I've been dithering on what colour to use for the background. Suggestions have included white, white with a spot, and grey,and at the moment I'm wondering about the fawn/beige in the photo as a possibility. So hard ! And should I stay with this 2-3-2-3-2 layout or change to a 3-2-3-2-3 arrangment. As it is at the moment I will have to make six half blocks to fill in the outside spaces.<br />
<br />
I don't do much in the garden. It's pretty much left to look after itself as long as there's plenty of greenery and a few spots of colour. But I couldn't help noticing today that the violets are starting to flower already. Surely ti's too early for that - it's still summer. They've been there for donkey's years and have never flowered this early before, even if the flowers are a bit small and insipid looking.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJagF7Cc7juEBO1hPu2TDyCfmoc3UhSPPGa6GcN7yV0gjw04b4D31SjK0g3TBlVClpZl8pQxdUsSd2XpUoK2sSW4Xw1tG3RdeGuVLXf09Lgq7nRUIL5amgtZQZ1yQ8LHfYAV2YrKJ5jfgM/s1600/Violet+in+Feb+2012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJagF7Cc7juEBO1hPu2TDyCfmoc3UhSPPGa6GcN7yV0gjw04b4D31SjK0g3TBlVClpZl8pQxdUsSd2XpUoK2sSW4Xw1tG3RdeGuVLXf09Lgq7nRUIL5amgtZQZ1yQ8LHfYAV2YrKJ5jfgM/s320/Violet+in+Feb+2012.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And then there's the hellebore, another long-time resident. It has always flowered late winter- early Spring but lately it's been blatantly flaunting itself and it's still summer. Perhaps it's trying to tell me something !<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyI3EqjvAczPdKflkqJphFE-hVhOlaQpC4atGnZTHPZ5X2yDZGRG-OkaIH5FDIgWoRomRRGjWkibJZdD58sS606dL7DtgkgQ0dUB_9k4I3XyBmJ7Owfy_e76SWKWLydEVniUB2TrzxjPR7/s1600/Hellebore.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyI3EqjvAczPdKflkqJphFE-hVhOlaQpC4atGnZTHPZ5X2yDZGRG-OkaIH5FDIgWoRomRRGjWkibJZdD58sS606dL7DtgkgQ0dUB_9k4I3XyBmJ7Owfy_e76SWKWLydEVniUB2TrzxjPR7/s320/Hellebore.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10557443058036435775noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618538164970670231.post-37405197674959529442012-02-14T18:28:00.000+11:002012-02-14T18:28:35.255+11:00Fifties Dress No 9 and Rose Star PiecingFinished Dress No 9 for the Dress Me Up quilt. Three more to go.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOFf-qo0uHfu4Xddi-eVCmjS87fc-343jPaG6hfrjBHp4tqluHBUIv-0ADB9x89lr9fxCvkP7wffiDyR2wOyhgzp5AbGLJXsqZevUhSQ61PQpJsQ_-hOGe3eIsBJUKBObSLl74keOcjxQb/s1600/Dress+9+c++finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOFf-qo0uHfu4Xddi-eVCmjS87fc-343jPaG6hfrjBHp4tqluHBUIv-0ADB9x89lr9fxCvkP7wffiDyR2wOyhgzp5AbGLJXsqZevUhSQ61PQpJsQ_-hOGe3eIsBJUKBObSLl74keOcjxQb/s320/Dress+9+c++finished.jpg" width="188" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
And I've also had a dabble with the Rose Star block which I first spotted in <a href="http://pbpatch.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Possum Blossom's blog</a> which led me on to some instructions at<a href="http://summerfete.blogspot.com.au/2012/01/rose-star-tutorial.html" target="_blank"> Summerfete</a> . I've only used hexagon-shaped templates until now so I was tempted to try out these different shapes.<br />

The samples I looked at had myriad colours and I don't trust myself choosing so many colours. So I thought let someone else do the choosing and started using a layer cake of Moda's Urban Cowgirl. All put together in a quilt the sight of these bright colours is going to knock you over at a dozen paces !<br />
<br />
One thing I discovered though is that I get on much better using cardboard templates instead of paper ones. Much more accurate and much sharper corners.<br />
<br />
I've also changed my philosphy on creating still more UFOs. I don't think that way any more. I am simply an adventurer dipping my toes in as many waters as possible. Who can resist when bloggers keep showing us so many interesting ideas. There are just not enough hours in the day to try them all. So thanks to all those bloggers.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10557443058036435775noreply@blogger.com4
